Currently the Monitor makes two formal reports to the Secretary of States each year, (against a statutory requirement of one). These are submitted to Parliament by Written Ministerial Statement.

The reports focus on:

• the quality of visa decision making in cases with limited appeal rights;
• the information available to visa applicants in categories that have a limited right of appeal if refused;
• how UK Border Agency responds to complaints from visa applicants refused with a limited right of appeal.

The Independent Monitor is able to make recommendations aimed at improving UK Border Agency's practice. There is a UK Border Agency team to ensure that the Monitor's recommendations, where accepted, are followed up and implemented.
