How to apply

In this section you will find all the information, guidance and documents you will need when you apply for a UK visa either on the downloaded application form, which is available in pdf format, or online (via our online application service).  Staff at our visa application centres can guide you through the application process in your country.

Recent changes include:

The Points-Based System (PBS)

The Points Based System (PBS) is a system for managing migration for those wishing to enter the United Kingdom for work or study. Full information about the points-based system and a self assessment calculator is available on the UK Border Agency website.

The following new guidance is now available for applicants who are resident outside the United Kingdom:

Points Based System Tier 2, Skilled Worker (INF 26)

Points Based System Tier 5, Temporary Worker (INF 27)

Points Based System Tier 5, Youth Mobility Scheme (INF 28)

Points Based System Tier 4, General and Child Student (INF 29)

Please note that when visa regimes change, there may be a short delay before the information on our website is updated.

Guidance for visa applicants

Our guidance for visa applicants answer common questions about applying for a wide variety of visa categories.

Most visa applications should be made online. If you need to print and fill in a visa application form, you can download the form you need from our visa application forms page.

Health (TB) screening

Applicants for UK visas valid for longer than six months in certain countries now require a certificate to show that they are free from infectious pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Full details available on our health screening page.

Fingerprint visas

The guide page to biometric collection for visa applicants explains in more detail what a 'biometric visa' is. Our YouTube video 'Thumbs up for biometrics' shows the biometric data collection in more detail.
